Let’s Answer Some Of Your Lawn Questions

Here you'll find some of our free tips and secrets, but not all of them. Enjoy, and remember you can always email, text, or call us for an answer to a question you don't find here.

  • When Should You Water Your Lawn

The best time of day is always in the morning; afternoon & night-time watering can encourage fungus growth. Also, particularly in a Sydney summer the temperatures can become very hot even before lunchtime so make sure not to water too late in the morning, get it done early.

  • How Often Should You Water Your Lawn

On average a deep watering twice weekly is enough for most lawns. This encourages deeper root growth. Short or shallow watering encourages your lawn to grow shallow roots. This makes your lawn less drought resistant. Obviously if we get a hot summer you may need to increase this frequency to cope with extreme temperatures.

  • When Should You Feed Your Lawn.

Spring is of course the best time to feed your lawn. This is when your lawn is going to grow the fastest. It’s a great time to help your lawn become thicker & lusher which helps to prevent weed growth. It is important to feed your lawn regularly as well, every 6 to 12 weeks depending on the type of fertiliser you’re using. Make sure not to overfeed your lawn as this can result in die back particularly with some of the stronger chemical fertilisers. We like organic fertilisers the best as these also improve the overall health of your soil, but we often use a chemical/organic combination to really get lawns humming along.

  • When Should You Top Dress Your Lawn

You should do this in early spring if possible. Top dressing helps to keep lawns even and is especially good for new lawns (less than three years old). After top dressing you can also and some seed and lawn starter fertiliser to encourage the lawn to thicken up. Top dressing is best down after cutting your lawn and coring or aerating first will give you the best result. Straight topsoil or a sandy loam can be used but best result come when using quality organically rich top-dressing mixes. Never put too much top dressing on the lawn as you'll smother it, leave the blades of the grass showing through otherwise you've over done it.

  • Mowing Tips

Regular mowing gives the best results. Mow your lawn often and never too short, your lawn should really be around 50mm high after mowing, any shorter and you risk sunburn and soil and root exposure. If you keep your grass a little longer than what is common practice in Australia, you'll also maintain higher soil moisture levels and reduced weed growth. If your lawn has become overgrown don't try and cut it all the way back in one go, spread say three cuts out over a ten-day period. This gives your lawn a chance to adjust more slowly to its shorter hairstyle. Really you don't want to cut any more than 33% of the height of the lawn off at any one time.
